Good luck. You might look for some examples of what has happened to other companies/users who didn’t back up their mail. Don’t be pushy but let him know that it would save IT costs in the long run as you will probably be doing less support on mail related issues.

Q&A: How to use Exchange server 2003?

Question by Revelation S: How to use Exchange server 2003?
This is a small business that only has one server. We have installed Exchange 2003 because we need to share calendars, but how to I get the client Outlook 2003 to work with Exchange? Do we need to move the mailboxes to an Exchange file? Please give me details, because I’m really lost!!!

On the outlook client, you need to add a new mail account of type Microsoft Exchange Server. Put in all the params and go. The client is easy to do.

Email if you really need more…

RightFax, receiving faxes to email?

Question by Bad Boy with a Gud Heart: RightFax, receiving faxes to email?
I have RightFax 8.5 and Exchange server 2010.

I am interesting about how to configure it to:
1) Receive inbound faxes to outlook email client

On the old mail server both pop3 and SMTP could be accessed on the same server, on our Exchange 2010 configuration POP3 is on one server, SMTP is on another. Having them on separate servers is a common practice. The sticking point is that the RightFax Email gateway does provide a way to split the functions – it does not have a separate configuration option, it uses one server for both POP3 and SMTP. Not sure how we get around this

The best answer would be to upgrade your RightFax server to version 10. RightFax 10 has a connector for Exchange 2010 and your current version is way out of support.
For a work around, you can try having two SMTP/POP3 Gateways in RightFax, one that is for outbound POP3 connections and the second for inbound fax to SMTP connections. You will find that Microsoft changed the way it handles message addressing and your outbound process may stop working.

Good luck,

Why can’t I register esebcli2.dll? Ntbackup does not recognize my alternate server as an Exchange 2000 server

Question by Brent R: Why can’t I register esebcli2.dll? Ntbackup does not recognize my alternate server as an Exchange 2000 server
I’m attempting to restore an information store, backed up from an Exchange 2000 SP3 server onto a file server in the same domain, to an alternate Exchange 2000 SP3 server in another, trusted domain. The original backup server says the specified computer is not a Microsoft Exchange server, or its Exchange services aren’t running. But it is and they are. Ntbackup uses the esebcli2.dll to determine this; it must be registered but registration fails.

Did you install Exchange in recovery mode? If you did a regular install of Exchange, and than you try to restore it from backup, you’ll run in to this sort of issues.

Q&A: How do I prevent Outlook 2007 from requiring Exchange server password on startup?

Question by Singularity: How do I prevent Outlook 2007 from requiring Exchange server password on startup?
Every time I start Outlook 2007 on my computer since adding a new exchange email account it requests the password for that account before I can use the program. Is there any way to have it automatically remember and submit my password to the server for me? I haven’t been able to find anything in the “Account Settings…” menu.

If your Exchange server is on your LAN, then you either need to join the domain or match your Windows login and password to your Exchange credentials. For example; if your exchange login is BOB and your password is COW. Then you need to make a user in USER ACCOUNT for BOB with password COW, then you can login, recreate your Outlook profile and you shouldn’t get a prompt. It will not work if you just rename your current Windows user account, you MUST create a NEW matching username.

If your Exchange server is hosted outside of your LAN, then you have no choice, you must authenticate each time.

Exchange server 2007 error?

Question by Ahmed: Exchange server 2007 error?
Just I’m in a bad need for your help regarding some problems in our Exchange 2007:

1- I need explanation why a service called “Help and Support service” is suddenly stopped.

2- What can I do to avoid stopping “Information store service” after restarting the server? And what’s the main reason that stop this
service after every time I restart the exchange server?

Appreciate to advise me ASAP

You need to check your log files… There simply isn’t enought information in your post to make a good diagnosis. Help and support should be fine, unless your using help you won’t need it. The information store should come up after every reboot. If it is not look for errors in your log files.

Exchange Backup Strategy…….?

Question by Sanjana Gupta: Exchange Backup Strategy…….?
Dear All,

Right now I am using Exmerge to take backup of all mailboxes in existing exchange server 2003. Circular logging is enabled on default First Storage Group.
Now the problem is some users are exceeding the mailbox size of 2 GB, thus Exmerge denied / failed to backup that mailboxes exceeded to 2 GB.
Can any one please let me know what all backup strategy should I opt to take backup of exchange database.
I have enabled Volume Shadow Copy Services on C drive and the Exchsrvr is on D: drive.
Which backup software (Free & Paid) can be used?
Hoping to receive favorable answer.

Thanks!

I had a similar problem like this at work once where the server went down because users mailboxes were too large, if i remember correctly we were running server 2003 and all we did was put a storage limit on and told the users to delete all there unwanted stuff and keep within the quota.

We were using Veritas Backup, seems to be popular with server 2003 users

An SBS install of SBS Standard will take AT LEAST 6 hours on a new server, provided you have a 3Mb/sec internet connection and you do all the appropriate patching to the system.

Q&A: What is the fastest way to back-up a MS-Exchange Server?

Question by Marcus: What is the fastest way to back-up a MS-Exchange Server?
We have a company of about 25 people and our exchange server is taking about 14-15 hours to back up on to an external hard drive every night. I believe we’re using the backup software that came with the Seagate External hard drives that we backup to. I see a lot of ads online, but I don’t know which ones to trust. Any suggestions?

Answer by Benjamin M
The problem is it’s an external hard drive. An external drive doesn’t have anywhere near the data through-put as an internal drive.

I would highly recommend buying an internal drive and backup to it OR buying a tape backup system to backup to. We use the Exabyte VA-2 system. Just make sure it’s a SCSI drive for fast data through-put.

Obviously, you want to keep the tapes off-site if you choose to go this route. I keep two weeks of tapes at home (I’m the IT Manager for my employer). I grab todays tape (Wednesday) and then put it in the drive and take Tuesday home when I leave work today. I have the backup set to run at 10pm every night and it’s done by 8am every morning and we backup around 60Gigs of data each night and have about 23 users on our Exchange system. We just have tons of other data, also.

Hypothetically, if you have a break-in during the night, you only lost yesterdays data and not a whole week if you only backup once a week.

I could go on and on about this, but the bottom line here is the problem lies in the fact you’re using an external hard drive. Either buy an internal hard drive and locate your server somewhere where it’s very hard to find and/or physically lock it up…or buy a tape backup system.

email/pm me for more assistance if you need it.
