Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 v. 2007?

Question by John: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 v. 2007?
We have a small office with about 15 computers. We have been running Outlook across our network in some piecemeal fashion which has worked ok but finally going to buy Exchange Server. It sounds like Exchange Server 2003 would be good as we won’t need to change our Outlook from 2003 as well as other software. I just don’t know if we need 2007. Bottom line, can anybody provide me a link to lists of differences betwee Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2007?

Q&A: MICROSOFT EXCHANGE 2007, how can i sent a message with an attached file bigger than 5 mb in outlook?

Question by : MICROSOFT EXCHANGE 2007, how can i sent a message with an attached file bigger than 5 mb in outlook?
hi guys, my problem is that in my work LAN, we have mail service provided by exchange server 2007, my boss wants to send an email to another company but she cant, maybe because exchange 2007 doesn’t permit send an attached file bigger than 2 MB, i went to her mailbox setting and i changed the delivery message size, but it doesn’t work …what can i do?

Best answer:

Answer by Ivy
You need to contact your service provider and tell them to increase the filesize limit for individual emails sent from your domain, or individual mailboxes/addresses. Since MS Exchange is a server service, you need to change the settings there, which you can’t if you don’t control the exchange server yourself.

Hope it helped! :)

Where can I outsource business class file server hosting for my small business?

Question by Steve: Where can I outsource business class file server hosting for my small business?
I outsource hosting for my Exchange server, SharePoint server, Web site server and soon hosted VoIP services. Now, I’d like to know if I can outsource my company’s file server to a hosted server. This would be for multiple users to access and synchronize files securely with collaboration, backup services, disaster recovery as well as location redundancy. Can you recommend a provider to me? Please tell me more about pros and cons, things to consider. Thanks!

Answer by Joe
Hi Steve,

Yes, it is possible to outsource your company’s file server. The fastest way to do so is to rent a fully managed dedicated server from an online company that specializes in offering such service. They can get you up and running within a few days.

Here are some must-have features to shop for:

1) At least 100Mbps bandwidth
2) Redundant or mirrored hard drives
3) Fully managed service
4) Off-server backup storage

The pros being that a fully managed firm takes care of patching and maintaining your server so you don’t have to hire personnel to do this job. Also, you don’t have to worry about the logistics involved in keeping a server cool and racked up in the office. The cons being there’s a monthly service fee involved when renting a dedicated server online.

Feel free to get in touch if you have any question or comment.

Cheers

In Exchange Server, is there a way to retrieve email records off the server after a mailbox has been deleted?

Question by dgrams2003: In Exchange Server, is there a way to retrieve email records off the server after a mailbox has been deleted?
We have a situation at work were we need to dig up a prior employee’s emails from a few months ago, but don’t have a final backup of the person’s mailbox. Is there a way to manually dig through the system and find anything that may be left over in a log file or something else of the sort?
Are there any detailed websites or elsewhere with explanations on how to do this? I need help. Jobs may be on the line. Good people’s jobs that had NOTHING to do with knowing about what backups we were doing at the time.
My boss learned his lesson and will be changing procedures from here on out, but we need to deal with the situation at hand.

Thanks for any input…

Why do we have .pst file saved on local computer when the email sync up from exchange server?

Question by Raj: Why do we have .pst file saved on local computer when the email sync up from exchange server?
Just curious. If I log on to any pc in the company and then start using my outlook it creates my .pst file in the profile. Question is what is the point of having .pst on the local pc since the email syncs up from exchange server?

2nd question is … If I backup the pst file of a user and then delete the user logon id and his mailbox. at some point later if the management wants to see the emails of that particular user how would I do that?

Please reply.

Answer by Ben
Your pst file is for your user, not for your account. A single user can have multiple accounts active in Outlook at once, with different sets of contacts for each account. Your PST file has to store the account credentials too- that’s how it logs in automatically when you open up Outlook. Also, think how much data it would have to download if it needed to download all your contacts and emails every time you opened Outlook.

Exchange Server 2007 on VirtualBox?

Question by studly09876: Exchange Server 2007 on VirtualBox?
Is it possible to install Exchange Server 2007 on a Virtual Box virtual machine?

Best answer:

Answer by ryanbauerle
I have installed Exchange Server 2003 and 2007 in virtual environments using VMware, so I am sure it will work in VirtualBox as well. According to there supported Guest OS list, they support MS Server 2003 and 2008, so this means that the OS is supported. After that it is as simple as installing the Exchange software on the OS; it shouldn’t be a problem at all.

What is the best way to do an Online backup of MS-Exchange?

Question by Matthew A: What is the best way to do an Online backup of MS-Exchange?
I work for a small business that is interested in backing up their Exchange server to somewhere off-site. I recently configured our SQL databases to backup to Amazon’s S3, and was hoping to arrive at a similar solution for Exchange. The major problem however, is that our backup software (Backup Exec) I believe does only full backups, which would be too much data to upload to Online Storage. My question is:

Is there a way with Microsoft’s built-In NTBackup (or with Backup Exec) to do an incremental or differential backup of the MS-Exchange database? And, if not, is there a third-party software solution that does this efficiently?

On a Side-note, I was wondering if anyone knew how Mozy-Pro worked. It advertises that it can automatically back up Exchange, but it is simply a different Front-End for S3, and I’m not sure if there’s any difference in how it does the actual back-ups (full / transactional / differential?) .

An easy way would be to setup NTBACKUP or Backup exec to backup your Exchange Mailbox Store(s) to a .bkf file located within a directory that your are currently backing up to amazon. That way the exchange backup get offsite just in a two step process instead of directly.

This is a great article on how to setup your email in Outlook 2007. http://help.godaddy.com/article/2649

You will need to know more than just your corporate login and password. You’ll need the Exchange server information and what type connection settings. Your corporate IT department may have instruction available either by phone or on a corporate web page. Good Luck.

In order to have a Front End server you need to have a Back End server..

So, you will need 2 servers.
